How Simply Computers Saved Susan’s MacBook Pro from Storage Woes
Susan reached out to me because her MacBook Pro was completely full and didn’t have enough space to update her work software. She had already taken it to her IT department, but they couldn’t resolve the issue. Their recommendation was to buy a new computer because they felt that the built-in storage on her current device was too small. This wasn’t the solution Susan wanted to hear. When I visited her home, I quickly confirmed that her internal storage was indeed full. However, I noticed that nearly half of the available space was being used up by Apple’s Time Machine feature. Time Machine is a built-in macOS tool that automatically creates system backups. Unfortunately, her setup was storing a year’s worth of backups on the internal drive, which wasn’t helpful and was unnecessarily using up space.
To resolve the issue, I recommended setting up an external drive for her backups. I purchased a reliable external drive and configured Time Machine to use it as the designated backup location. Once the external drive was connected via her MacBook’s USB port, Time Machine began transferring the existing backups and freeing up space on the internal storage. Over the next few hours, the system purged the unnecessary files from the internal drive while continuing to back up her data to the external one. By the time I was finished, her MacBook had a properly configured backup system, plenty of free storage, and was running smoothly.
Susan was relieved to have a solution that didn’t require replacing her expensive computer. She also appreciated that she now had a reliable backup system in place to protect her data.
