Helping Julia: Recovering from a Computer Scam
Julia was using her computer one evening, when a full-screen pop-up appeared. It was warning her about a virus on her computer. The message urged her to contact Microsoft immediately at the phone number displayed on her screen. This should have been a first warning as Julia was using an Apple computer. Unfortunately, this is a common scam that often targets elderly users. Julia called the number and allowed the scammer to access her computer. She was in the process of providing her banking information when she realized something wasn’t right. She unplugged her computer and hung up the phone.
Acting quickly, Julia called her bank to report the incident. Thankfully, her local credit union was able to shut down her card and account before any money was withdrawn. However, the credit union required her to have her computer professionally cleaned before she could regain access to her accounts. That’s when she reached out to Simply Computers for help.
I went to Julia’s home and picked up her iMac to bring it back to my office. For longer and more complex tasks like this, it’s often better to work in a controlled environment where I can perform a full system backup before making any changes. After securing her important files, I wiped the hard drive and reinstalled a fresh copy of macOS. Once the new system was set up, I restored her documents, photos, and internet shortcuts.
I also explained to Julia that she would need to re-enter her passwords for her online accounts. For added security, I recommended creating new, unique passwords for critical accounts such as her banking, email, and cable services. Additionally, I reconnected her printer and ensured her Wi-Fi was working properly.
By the time I returned her iMac, Julia had a computer that was not only secure but also running faster than it had in years. She was relieved and pleased with the outcome, knowing her data was safe and her system was clean. More importantly, Julia now understood how to recognize similar scams in the future, ensuring she could avoid such situations moving forward.
