Melissa, a Simply Computers customer in Branford, was having trouble with her MacBook Air. It had become frustratingly slow, and it was sometimes shutting down unexpectedly. She wanted to know whether it was worth repairing or whether it was time to replace it.

A computer that slows down and shuts off can have more than one problem. The important thing was to avoid assuming that every symptom came from the same cause.

During the evaluation, I found CleanMyMac running background activity that could contribute to the computer’s poor performance. I disabled the remaining CleanMyMac activity to see whether that would make a difference.

That was a useful first step, but it did not prove that CleanMyMac was responsible for the unexpected shutdowns. If the shutdowns stopped after disabling it, the background software might have been part of the problem.

The battery was another concern. An aging battery can cause unpredictable behavior, including unexpected shutdowns, so it remained a possible explanation if the problem continued.

There was no clear evidence that the internal storage drive itself had failed. Replacing parts without a confirmed diagnosis would have risked spending money without solving the problem.

Because the MacBook Air was older and offered limited upgrade options, Melissa also had to consider whether further repairs would be a sensible investment.

For now, the sensible approach was to see how the computer behaved with the unnecessary background activity disabled. If it continued shutting down, the battery would remain a likely area to investigate.

Sometimes a computer can be repaired, but that does not automatically make the repair worthwhile. With an older laptop, putting that money toward a newer computer may ultimately be the better choice.
