Karen's Printer Wasn't Showing Up
Karen called because her printer had stopped cooperating with the devices she actually used. Her older laptop was having trouble seeing it correctly, and she also wanted to know whether she could print from her iPhone.
The printer itself was powered on and connected, so I started with the printer rather than assuming the hardware had failed. I updated its firmware, then turned to the laptop. The older computer needed some driver work before Windows would communicate with the printer properly again.
The iPhone was the easy part. Once the printer connection was confirmed, the phone detected it immediately and printed without a problem. The laptop took a little more troubleshooting, but after correcting the driver issue it was printing again as well.
The entire service call took about 15 minutes. It was a good example of why a printer that suddenly disappears does not necessarily need to be replaced. Sometimes the printer is fine and the real problem is firmware, drivers, or the connection between devices.
